Strange sound on Shortwave

This was heard tonight between 4840 - 4880 kHz.
Anyone who knows what this can be.

This morning I was told that it is CODAR, a worldwide network
of stations to monitor the wave height of the oceans.

33.42 mHz WQDC703 - Orlando / Florida

The TA mediumwave conditions are very average at the moment
and I was told that the DX is now on 30 - 36 Mhz.
Therefore I decided to build a multiband Inverted-V
for 33,38 and 43 mHz.

This afternoon I tried to catch some DX on Low VHF.
I heard a lot of Spanish Taxi dispatchers around 30 Mhz
and tuning a bit higher I heard this weather station on 33.42 mHz.

The National Weather Service from Melbourne, FL.
Every couple of minutes a recording over the top of the Weather Service says
"This is WQDC703 1650 AM. This is the City of Orlando Office of Emergency Management. Stay tuned for the most updated weather conditions from the National Weather Service in Melbourne."
The distance between my location and the transmitter location
of 33.42 MHz is 7402 km.

Excellent tropo conditions to Sweden yesterday.
Good tropo is very rare nowadays so this one was very welcome
and Mr. Hepburn had it right this time.
The most distant transmitter logged was Mora at 963 km.

a nice evening Sporadic Es opening into the Balkans.

This was received between 1640 - 1900 hours UTC.
Local time is UTC + 2 hours.

At 0800 utc Rai Uno/Italy faded in with strong pics on
channel IA (53,75 mHz) and on Channel IB=E4 (62,25 mHz).
At 0930 utc followed by JRTV - Jordan on channel E3 (55,25 mHz).

Radio Marina to test from radio ship on 1485 kHz

The Dutch commercial broadcaster Radio Marina provides
this weekend a test broadcast on 1485kHz medium wave
from the radio ship " Jenni Baynton " in Harlingen (The Netherlands).

The test transmission will take place from Saturday, July 30th 08:00 to 18:00 and Sunday, July 31 on 1485kHz (202m), medium wave and
on the Internet at www.radiomarina.nl

Today's Band 1 Es opening again featured very unstable propagation.
The skip area was jumping from one country to another.
At one moment the band could be almost empty, the next moment
the channels saturated with more than one station.
This was logged between 17.18 and 18.48 hrs UTC:

IA - Rai Uno - Mt. Cammarata/Italy

R2- STV1 - Bratislava / Slovakia

R1 - M1 - Budapest/Hungary
Interesting to note on their R1 frequency tonight 49.739.6, running a strapline talking about VHF, and UHF, and Aug 15 2011.
Presumably their intended switch of this particular transmitter.

Dutch TV tower collapses after fire

15 juli 2011:
A fire caused a partial collapse of a 300 m communications mast in northern Netherlands on Friday, knocking out television and radio stations.

The fire at the television mast in Hoogersmilde in the Drenthe province, about 160 km northeast of Amsterdam, broke out around 2:00 pm and then at about 3:45 pm the upper part of the mast collapsed.
A 200-metre-high metal mast collapsed on top of a 100-metre concrete tower after the fire broke out.

"Nobody is believed to have been injured," officials told, adding that the area suffered severe communication problems with the tower used as a major broadcast hub for television, radio and telephone communications.

No radio and TV
Several regional and national broadcasters are also effected by the fire and the collapse of the tower. They can not broadcast over the air. In the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel in the areas of no reception of public radio stations Radio 1, Radio 2, 3FM and Radio 4.

Sky Radio, Radio Veronica, BNR, Slam! FM, Q-music and 100%NL among commercial radio stations from the air in the north of the country. The transmitters Netherlands 1, 2 and 3 are not on television to receive digital. This was a spokesman for station manager Broadcast Partners just announced. The damage is significant according to the company.

Nothing much happened the last few days in Band 1 and there were
only a few short openings in Band 2.
Even in Band 1 it was quiet with only brief openings of the regulars
from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Only RAI UNO on IA was sometimes in for hours and RTP Portugal was strong on E2 and E3.
Once again the carrier from Iran came in yesterday around 18.44 on
48.239.620 together with the Dubai Sport carrier on 48.250.242
but it did not get to video level.

Sporadic Es - 6 july 2011

Yesterday was once again a very good Es day.
Around noontime Band 2 went open to Italy and Algeria,in addition
some stations from Tunesia faded in.
Then in the late afternoon the Es cloud moved more to the east and stations
from Russia, Belarussia and Ukraine appeared in the FM band.
However stations were quite tricky to ID because strong muf and white noise made by several stations on the same frequency at the same time.
Some highlights:
Clip one is from Radius FM, Ushachy/Belarus on 102.70 mHz
Clip two is from Doroshnoe Radio, Efremov/Russia on 106.30 mHz

The Eastern TV channels reached up to R3 with
5 Kanal from St. Petersburg and TV Centr from Moscow.

TV Band 1 opening to the Middle East

A MAJOR sporadic Es opening on 1st July at my location.
This E skip really was a mess.
The stations kept on fighting each other to come out the clearest.
It started already at 10.00 hours with Rai Uno on channel IA
and IB/E4.
The channels R1,R2 and R3 were full of stations from Russia, Ukraine,
Moldova, Hungary and Makedonia.
Nice to see was that Moldova still uses the UEIT test card which
could be seen on channel R1 until 1600 hours as the normal
programme starts.
Around 1640 hours stations from the Middle East fading in with
Iran on channel E2, E3 and E4.

E3 - Jordan 29 june 2011

At around 1130 this morning Channel E3 (55.250 mHz video)opened
up with JRTV Jordan.
That on that time shows a cooking programme , which was parallel
seen on the Hotbird SAT TV.

At that time on a clear channel as Syria on E3, normally a bit higher,
was gone.

This season has been very poor Es wise.
The last decent Sporadic Es opening in FM Band 2
in my QTH was on 26 May, which is almost a month ago.
I have never experienced such a bad start.
At last Band 2 went open to Italy, France and Tunesia.
This was heard between 18.40 and 19.20 utc with all Italian
stations from Sardinia and the French one from Corsica.

RUV-Iceland on TV channel E4 - 10.06.2011

After a few days dry spell the TV Band1 Es were back in full June force on
10th. June 2011.
This intense opening lasted more than 12 hours.
It started around noontime and ended far past midnight.
A mix bag of regular TV stations from Russia/Belarus/Ukraine/Moldova
and Makedonia were seen.

The highlight appeared around 1900 utc (= 21.00 hours local time)
with RUV from Iceland on channel E4 = 62.250 mHz video.
I could see both RUV carriers on 62.251.318 mHz from Skalafell
and 62.251.670 mHz from a unid location.

Sporadic Es TV Band1 - 3 June 2011

Band 1 was open most of the day with good to strong signals.
At 0930 hrs local time I had a strong carrier on channel E2
from Iran (Irib-2) but R1 channels were so strong I couln't
get any video.
On channel E4 I saw for the first time the Al-Amal news transmitter
also from Iran popping up for a few seconds.

During a Sporadic Es opening yesterday afternoon in TV Band 1,while
I was watching to channel E2 via the PC-TV card on my main PC, I let
the PMSDR receiver running with the WRplus software

As you can see I won't miss any openings as I am able to see
on R1 49.735 up to 49.770 mHz.
When switching my PC-TV card to channel R1 there was a strong picture
from M1 - Budapest / Hungary.

with Iran at video level for a short moment.

Finally the TV Band 1 Sporadic Es season has reached the Northern Part of
The Netherlands.
It started on Saturday 21st of May and below some screenshoots what
is received from ie Hungary/Russia/Belarus/Ukraine and Moldova on the
video channels R1 = 49.750 mHz and R2 = 59.250 mHz with audio
on R1-56.250 mHz and R2-65.750 mHz.

Dominicans in the X-band

This morning while listening to the overnight recordings of a part of the mediumwaveband my first impression was that there were again very bad TA conditions.
But I was surprised to hear two Dominican Republic radiostations
in the X-band around 0400 utc.
On 1640 kHz Radio Juventud Don Bosco from Santo Domingo and
on 1680 kHz Radio Senda from San Pedro de Macoris.
Both of them are personal firsts.

LPAM Radio

LPAM (Low Power AM) stations have a special licence from Ofcom to allow them to broadcast to a very small area, such as a hospital, university or army barracks. They have a maximum power output of 1 Watt, which is very small compared to other radio stations on the medium wave band; most local stations have power of about 1-5 kW, and some national services are 500kW (500,000 Watts).

Despite this low power it is possible to receive these broadcasts over a wide area if you have a good receiver and antenna - stations can be heard over 100 km away during the daytime. During darkness hours the signals can be heard over many hundreds of km if conditions are good and the frequency used is not occupied by high power broadcasters.

PMSDR/Winrad and E-MU 0202USB Audio Interface

With my old Audigy-2 soundcard only 96 Khz wide band recording was possible.
I used this Creative PCI card for more than a year to my fully satisfaction,
but to use the maximum span in WRplus or WinradHD a 196 Khz soundcard was needed.
My choice was a Creative E-MU 0202 usb soundcard.
This is a 24-bit/192 khz recording and playback audio interface
so wide band recording up to 192 khz is now possible.
I am very satisfied with this E-Mu soundcard which sounds great
especially with use of the E-MU Asio drivers.

Inputs for right and left mono 6.3 Jacks - do not use the stereo input.

Our PMSDR group member Michiel made me this audio cable:
1 pc 3.5 stereo Jack plug and 2 mono 6.3 Jack`s and 1 meter of good
quality audio cable (double audio cable which you can split).

This is a popular new tuner equiped with HD that is rating high with other DXers. I recently added one to the shack and have to say I'm very impressed with the selectivity right out of the box compared to my Kenwood KT 6040 with 80/110kHz IF filters.
I really enjoy the sound and weak signal performance of
the Sony much better than that of the Kenwood.

Not a lot to report Sporadic Es wise.
Of course I have had Sporadic Es last week on TV Band 1 but only the
regulars from Russia, Ukraine,Belarus, Estonia, Moldova,
Croatia, Macedonia,Hungary, Italy and Portugal but nothing exceptional.
Until today I have had no luck in receiving RUV from Island on E4,
but a DX fellow 25 miles south of me did receive RUV several times last week.
From the Middle East I have only seen video from Iran on E2
and Jordan on E3 and strong carriers from Syria on E2 and E4 but
no video so far.
Hopefully next month will bring some exceptional TV-DX from Africa,
Middle-East and some nice TA openings.

This morning at 08.05 utc I received Rai Uno/Italy just below E2 from a unknown location.

Well known TV-DX'er Paul Farley from the UK sent me the
following comment regarding this mystery.

Nothing to get excited about today only the "R" channels had sometimes good video.

An amazing sporadic e today starting here around noon with good to strong
video on R1,R2 and R3.
Even at 2130utc there is still activity on the "R" channels with 1TV from Russia.
For the first time this season I saw RTL Klub from Pecs/Hungary on R2 and
on channel R3 TV Tsentr from Moscow and 5TV from Saint Petersburg
a personal first.

Another good Sporadic E opening today.
A lot of "R" channels was seen from Russia/Ukraine/Moldova and Hungary.
On the Icom R75 I had two strong E2 carriers:
48.250.213 probable Dubai and another one on 48.253.681 there's supposed to be an E2 transmitter in Afghanistan but the offset is unknown.
No video was seen due to heavy interference from 2Plus/Moldova on R1.
Most likely I had my first TA carrier on A2 = 55.259.998 with 60hz sidebands.
The antenna was pointed to the North-West.
Again no luck with the video as from the back of my antenna I had strong
signals from Jordan and Italy.

On channel R2 I could log the test card of Kiev/UKR which is very rare nowadays.
Maybe it is only used for a local programme start.

Sporadic E conditions were well down most of the day.
At 1630z however a sudden explosions of some "R" channels and for the first time this season I could grab a rather good pic of Iran on channel E2.
This was seen from 1630 - 1710 utc.

Sporadic E propagation was life almost all afternoon in FM-Band II
with a long last opening mostly into north-west and eastern Spain.
The first half hour of the opening every frequency was occupied with more
than one station making it hard for the RDS signal to come through.

First real signs of sporadic es here today.
It started right after noontime in TV Band 1
with Rai Uno on IA and IB/E4 both channels with good video.
On E2 I saw the video carriers of
Iran ( 2x ) 48.239.622 Mhz / 48.259.242 Mhz
and Syria on 48.250.161 Mhz
but the signals were to weak for video/audio.
Also good video on E4 from MTB-1 - Pelister (Macedonia).

KAZ antenna

My FlyVideo3000 PCI-TV card is sent abroad for further modification
and is not yet returned so I can not watch the Sporadic Es TV-Band1 pics.
Therefore I took the time last week to make some space in the garden to install a KAZ antenna for mediumwave TA-DX.
Due to other garden works I had temporary dismantle my EWE and Flag antenna.
But both will be re-installed in due course.
A comparison between the above antennas and the KAZ is therefore not possible at the moment.

Height = 23 feet
Base length = 72 feet
Balun = 48/11 SS
No resistor in use at the moment.
Feedpoint to 310 degrees.

FM-RDSDX demo

Finally I got the RDSDX software with Arno Vaino's remote control unit working.
I connected this unit between a Kenwood KT-6040 tuner
and a Conrad RDS Manager.
As you can see on this demo the displayed frequency top left is
coming from my KT 6040 when tuning and it shows a very quick RDS.
Arno Vainio designed this remote controller for the Sony ST-SE520, ST-SE700, ST-SA3ES, ST-SA5ES and Kenwood KT-6040 -type of receivers.
It might work in other type of Sony receivers as well, but this was not tested. Currently only remote controlling from receiver side to PC is supported.

AutoHotkeys for the PMSDR receiver

The well known Scottish MW-DX'ers David Hamilton and Ken Baird have altered a Perseus hotkey script for use for the pmsdr and Winrad ver 1.6.1.
So I can now have automated recordings for anytime of the day/night of my choice.

I have not been adding much on here for the last months mainly due to not
having anything worthy to report.
I had hoped for a number of TA-DX recordings with the PMSDR
to put on this blog, but just when I had purchased this very good receiver MW conditions dropped down rapidly
I recently made a PMSDR recording of the mediumwave around 900 Khz.
It is not DX, but only have meant to give an impression of PMSDR and
WinradHD.

PMSDR - a new low cost SDR receiver

Recently I bought a new General Coverage HF receiver the PMSDR.
This professional designed and produced Software Defined Radio product is created by IW3AUT and produced by RF System in Italy.

Having used the receiver now for a few weeks I must say that the price
/quality ratio is very good.
It is a very sensitive receiver and outperforms my other receivers Racal RA17L and the Icom R71E.
After having read also the very positive comments and tests as described on several German Ham-forums this receiver is a serious competitor of the
SDR-IQ and the bigger ones like Perseus and SDR-14.

About the PMSDR:
The PMSDR is a Software Defined Radio for the entire VLF-LF-HF field.
The principle of this receiver based on QSD as a mixer that mixes the RF
signal to an intermediate frequency signal in the audio field. The
intermediate frequency signals are further processed by the soundcard of
your PC or notebook. The sound card digitizes the signals after they are
further processed by the SDR software. The SDR software filters and
demodulate the signal.

The PMSDR characterized by its high sensitivity that over the entire
frequency (100 kHz - 55 MHz) is almost constant (ca. 0.25 uV/-120 dBm,
switched filter, 2400 Hz bandwidth (S + N) / N = 3dB).
Such sensitivity is achieved without making the entire preamplifier dynamic
area of the sound card is used. Even with a standard 16 bit sound card, as
these are built into the current generation notebooks
and PCs, values around 100 dB are achieved!
All these values are achieved by using low-noise OPA's and a modern
programmable oscillator.
The effect of the PMSDR has 4 band-pass filters to 30 MHz, these filters
can also be disabled.

The band-pass filters work less well below 700 kHz, there are additional
band filters is recommended.

You only have one PC with a soundcard (stereo input) and a USB jack. The
receiver is powered via the USB port.

The ultimate control of the receiver is powered by the
supplied program WinRad "under Windows XP and Vista, but it also works with" PowerSDR-IQ "and the Linux operating" SDR-SHELL ".
Updates through the USB port can easily be uploaded.

The kit is delivered pre-assembled. All SMD components (175 pieces) are
mounted and the microprocessor is preprogrammed.
You only need to assemble the conventional components such as LEDs, strips, connectors, crystal etc.

The size of the entire receiver are only 10 x 8 x 4.6 cm (W x L x H) and
comes complete with software, housing, cables and LCD display.
The various components can also be supplied separately.

As I am not a technician myself my local PMSDR supplier was willing against some small additional costs to build a complete lCD-box as per above picture.

It goes very badly in recent weeks with the TA-DX.
Only the regular East Coast stations are coming in but still weak on a noisy band.
Another very poor morning on MW and the only thing of interest I heard
was WTNI with their new slogan on 1640 Khz at 0715z.
WTNI has changed their talk progamme in Sports ESPN Radio.

They IDed now as Sports Radio 1490/1640 The Team with ESPN.

It was quiet on this page since November 20. This had everything to do with the bad TA conditions of recent weeks. The MW band produced only weak and noisy signals at that time.
But yesterday and today conditions improved and I observed much stronger and stable signals.
Especially this morning was good and among the strong regulars I heard Calgary on 770 and 960 Khz for a short period around 0744z.

this morning.
The best time for DX was around 0700z with some Calgary and
Manitoba stations and a few SS.

After several day's with very bad TA conditions, I had only weak
and fading signals at my location, this morning however I could observe some stronger signals especially after 0800 utc. with a first from 1160 KSL.

2 logs worth noting were 1540 CHIN on October 14th. and 1590 WAKR from this morning.

maintenance I managed to log WAKR.
